India ranks 143rd in Internet speed

I have read a very important article in one of the leading magazine regarding the Internet speed in India which I feel equally important to share with all of you . I m quoting it below.

A report released in Akamai- a firm that runs a global distributed network of servers-on May11,2011,painted a poor pictures of India in the domain of Internet. According to the report India currently  ranks 143rd globally in Internet speed. The average connectivity speed in India in the third quarter of 2010 was 0.8 Mbps(megabits per second). This amounted to a 6.9 percent quarterly  decline  and 9.1 percent  yearly decline. India is the only country to witness a fall in Internet speed among  the Asian countries covered in the study.

The average Internet speed in the world  was registered at 1.9 Mbps. South Korea topped the list of countries with fastest Internet connection with average speed of over 13 Mbps. Among the countries surveyed, only Egypt and Sudan were behind India. In broadband connectivity, India ranks 129th in the report. The adoption of broadband Internet in India has been rather disappointing. India has only 4.5 percent  Internet connection above 2 Mbps.
Access to Internet at convenient prices and at fast speeds is no longer a luxury. It has become  a sign of development  and most countries proudly showcase the progress made in the sphere. The report shows that  India still cuts a sorry figure in the arena. According to experts slow adoption of broadband services and the overall low speed of the Internet will hamper business that depend on high Internet broadband consumption consumption, such as digital media providers and the like
